The PS5 does not connect to Bluetooth headphones the way your phone does. Sony has said this is because of latency (sound delay) and bandwidth problems. So if you try to pair your earbuds or AirPods in the PS5 settings, they will not work for sound.
The good news is that there are easy ways to fix this.
Method 1: Use a Bluetooth adapter (best way)
A Bluetooth adapter is a small USB device. You plug it into a USB port on the console, and then your headphones can connect to the adapter.
Follow these steps:
1. Plug the adapter into a USB port on your PS5. 2. Turn on your PS5. 3. Put your headphones in pairing mode. 4. Put the adapter in pairing mode too. Check its manual for how. 5. Wait until the adapter and the headphones connect. 6. On the PS5, open the sound settings and choose the USB adapter as your audio output.
Buy an adapter that says it works with PS5. Also, many adapters only send sound out. Some third-party headsets work for audio only, even if they have a microphone. That means you may not be able to use the mic for voice chat.
Method 2: Use your TV
Some new TVs have Bluetooth built in. You can connect your headphones to the TV, and then you hear the PS5 sound through it. This costs nothing, but check that your TV supports Bluetooth audio first.
Method 3: Use a wire
If your headphones have a cable, plug it into the 3.5 mm jack on the bottom of your DualSense controller. This is the fastest fix, and it has no delay.
Method 4: Buy a PS5-ready headset
Sony makes its own headsets for the PS5. They use a USB adapter, not Bluetooth. Most of Sony's own PS5 accessories use wires or a USB adapter instead of Bluetooth. They work well and often support voice chat.
What does work with Bluetooth?
The PS5 does have Bluetooth, but only for some things. You can connect controllers, media remotes, and wireless keyboards. To do this, open Settings, choose Accessories, then Bluetooth Accessories.
Quick fixes if it does not work
- Restart your PS5 and your headphones. - Turn off other devices nearby that your headphones might connect to, like your phone. - Check that the adapter is in a working USB port. - Make sure the PS5 audio output is set to the adapter.
Final tip
If you want to play fast games, a wired or PS5-made headset gives the best sound timing. For quiet late-night play, a good Bluetooth adapter is a cheap and easy choice.
